Great times at 2010 Transporters Party

Posted by Sirinya on 6/07/2010
Brian and Evy opened their home again for the 18th annual Transporters party. I'm pleased to report that the new and improved Mode Split Stickers were a hit. They were also impossible to miss since they were in neon shades of yellow, green, and pink.

Sampling of mode split stickers.

John Gahbauer  carpooled with Dave Castle.
Forty-two people attended the Transporters party, up five from the year before. (Note: The number excludes Lilly Taylor the Golden Retriever, whose purpose at the party was to be adorable and to eat leftovers that had fallen to the floor.)
Lilly Taylor the Golden Retriever. She's so cute!!!
Like last year, carpooling was the most prevalent mode. Eighteen of us carpooled (or fampooled) to our destination, as illustrated by the graph below.

But perhaps as a reflection of re-emergence of cycling as a popular mode amongst the current cohort of MA candidates or cycling's arrival as a It Mode amongst Angelenos, cycling was the 2nd most popular mode of transportation. Eight times as many people arrived by bike on Friday. Of course, it is also possible that the word had gotten out about Juan's mode split sticker for people who traveled solo:

It is the one time of the year where transportation geeks can get together to discuss their projects, their summer plans, their year, and perhaps have a little experiment in what happens to travel behavior when you must openly disclose your mode choice.

Other notes:
  • David P. arrived via motorcycle.
  • There were more cyclists than stickers; I am so proud that the 9th cyclist to arrive actually made his own sticker.
  • I flagged Don Shoup as a "multi-modal" commuter since evidently he'd ridden his bicycle to Brian's earlier in the day.
  • All the PhD candidates arrived solo. Next time, they should try sampling the social benefits of carpooling.
For the sake of comparison, here is last year's mode split graph:
Labels: carpool, social marketing, transit, transportation, travel behavior
