Planning Candidates in GSA Elections - CONGRATS!

Posted by Jeremy on 4/26/2010

As many of you are aware, there were two Planners in last week's GSA elections, along with 7 other candidates vieing for the leadership roles in our oft-unnoticed by potentially influential student government.  Those two Planners, 2nd Year MA students Luis Limon and Cheye-Ann Corona were victorious, along with the rest of their Public Education Party, sweeping out the old administration and bringing in a full slate of new leadership.  BruinPlanners wishes them good luck in the coming year - though for Shoup's sake, perhaps they'll find a way to cash-out of the GSA OFFICER FREE PARKING.

For full results, including what happened to the referenda items and the numeric breakdown, click below for the rest of this story.

Below are the full results of the GSA Election, as delivered via email by Mohamed Jukaku, GSA Elections Manager:

-----

Hi Everyone,
I just want to thank the candidates for running a great race, and for the E-Board for all your help.  As you know, we had our Elections Board meeting today to go over and certify the results of the election.  It was a very close race, but we are happy to announce the following results:

Cumulative Ballots Cast:  1349
Total Eligible Voters:  11485
Voter Turnout:  ~11.75%

GSA Officers (winning candidates)

President:  Lincoln Ellis (Public Education Party slate)
Vice President - Internal:  Luis M. Limon (Public Education Party slate)
Vice President - External: Cheye-Ann Corona (Public Education Party slate)
Vice President - Academic:  Kimberlina McKinney (Public Education Party slate)

Refereda

UCSA Referendum:  Passed
Assembly Referendum:  Passed

A formal complaint was filed regarding the UCSA referendum and was asked to be removed from the ballot completely.  The complaint was in regards to the fact that the entire paragraph (rather than just the last sentence of the paragraph) was highlighted and striked out on the Supplemental Information link.  However, after considering various factors, the Elections Board decided to keep the votes as-is and not remove the referendum from the ballot.  These factors include, but are not limited to, the fact that the Additional Information link (and the GSA website) had the correct information, the GSA website is the only source of official information regarding the referendum (as stated in the GSA Codes), the actual wording on the ballot itself was correct, etc.  Furthermore, the Supplemental Information webpage was corrected within 24 hours of the start of the elections.

The breakdown of the votes is as follows:
President
Jamal Madni:  604 votes
Lincoln Ellis:  682 votes
Vice President - Internal
Luis M. Limon: 713 votes
Nathaniel Isaacson: 569 votes

Vice President - External

Adam J. Fowler: 505 votes
Cheye-Ann Corona: 766 votes

Vice President - Academic

Netta Avineri: 498 first place votes
Kimberlina McKinney: 643 first place votes
Ayo Adeyeye: 138 first place votes

UCSA Referendum

Yes: 663 votes
No: 606 votes

Assembly Referendum

Yes: 607 votes
No: 502 votes

Once again, the E-Board would like to thank all the candidates for running, and would like to congratulate the winners.  Also, we hope that the runners-up continue to be active participants in the GSA.  Thank you all.

Best,
Mohamed
