Affordable Housing Projects in Belo Horizonte

Posted by Caroline on 8/27/2009
Jessica and I are currently in
Belo Horizonte, Brazil
working on our capstone project.
Here's a little clip from our visit to
Vila Viva's slum upgrading/urbanization project.

Até mais!

Looks good, how are these funded? Is this part of Mihna Casa Minha Vida? Does the government fund the buyers through the FGTS or similar scheme? Or is this straight funding to gift the units to qualified end users?
I have to say the units look a bit grim from outside, not much has been done about the external esthetics but the inside looks pretty good, units are bigger than I would have expected, at least they look that way on film.
Good to see these projects actually happening and not just being talked about, I do think that the architects need to put more effort into esthetics, there is no need to build ugly buildings.

Hey, so the project is actually through the Belo Horizonte municipality, it is part of their program called Vila Viva, but it is funded through a few federal housing programs such as PAC. The housing is part of their resettlement of families removed from risk areas or for infrastructure improvements, and is therefore free to the families (besides the new payments for public services, etc).
We were also surprised at the size of the apartments, they also provide a three room apartment. We would love to talk to you more about the program when we get back to UCLA and when we are more knowledgeble about it when we are done here. :) happy to see a comment!
