UCLA's own parking rockstar Donald Shoup made yet another media appearance yesterday to discuss LA's increase in parking meter rates on KPCC's AirTalk. Scroll down the page a bit to find the archived audio, and don't mind the reference to "David Shoup," whoever that is...
Props to Curbed LA for catching this and posting it. It's kind of interesting to read the discussion of this issue in the comments to their post. It's fun to see them slowly starting to understand Shoup's argument, and as a bonus you get a little dose of Curbed commenters' usual cattiness. (For all the bile some of those people pour into their posts, you'd swear their lives consisted of nothing more than writing blog comments all day. Oh wait...)
US News and World Report includes urban planning in its Best Careers for 2009 feature
US News and World Report profiled urban planning in its Best Careers 2009 feature earlier this month, calling it a "multi-faceted job for a multi-talented person." What I found really interesting were the comments; over 50 people took the time to write real critique (and not the junk you usually find on news articles) about the article's prognostications on salary ranges and job prospects.
Some took the time to write more thoughtful comments about their career trajectories, how they transitioned from the public sector to the private sector and vice versa. Others laughed at the magazine's distinction of planning as a "best career" for 2009, citing the economic downturn and the subsequent slowdown in development and hiring freezes in the public sector.

Urban Planning Holiday Party!
Festivities will be in Koreatown next Thursday, the 11th. We'll first meet up at beloved first year Mathew Palmer's terrace, which has plenty of pretty open space for us to use and make merriment in, and then roll to one of the many delightful local haunts: the HMS Bounty, Frank n' Hanks, or maybe even a little karaoke joint. Bring some booze and/or a snack with you! The current economic situation calls for shared costs, after all ;-) Here's the instructions from our gracious host:
